One year ago today we lost a legendary voice of heavy metal, Ronnie James Dio.

I was 7 years old when my step-sister introduced me to metal. I found Dio shortly after the release of his solo album ‘Holy Diver’; it was the first metal LP I ever bought and I still have it to this day.

Dio’s voice helped raise me. It inspired me. It gave me strength. It was as if he always knew what to say; like he was speaking directly to me.

I spent years hoping to see and hear him live in concert. I was finally afforded that ability in August 2009 when Heaven and Hell played the WaMu theater here in Seattle. I splurged on a 6th row ticket. It cost me near $100 but it was worth every cent. The performance was the equivalent to a spiritual experience for me. To hear his voice… Once again, he was singing to me.

Not long after that performance did the world find out he had been diagnosed with cancer. The world rallied together and sent messages of love and encouragement to Ronnie. We hoped, many prayed, but we never lost faith that he would recover and come back stronger than ever. And then he was taken from us.

I never got to meet him. I never got to say thank you. So I’m going to say it now…

Thank you Ronnie. Thank you for your amazing voice, your strength and your inspiration when I needed it most. You will always be loved and remembered.

Good journey and peace be with you.
